Donna Brazile Joins Fox News And I’m Here For It. This Is Why.

Donna Brazile Joins Fox News (1)

So this Fox News article popped into my suggested article queue earlier this week, and according to my Facebook timeline apparently some folks are absolutely not here for it:

I’m going to start by saying this out loud for the people in the back with their headphones on: I am still rooting for everybody black. And that’s why I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Donna Brazile joined the Fox News team. As far as I’m concerned, if Donna’s announcement made you big mad, I don’t think you’re really looking at the bigger picture.

Remember that we still live in a divided America, not this alleged post-racial era some thought we entered in 2008. I think we all know by now that certain foreign agents tried (and continue to try) to influence our political process by playing a divide and conquer game based purely on our political ideologies, prejudices, and biases (implicit, explicit and otherwise). Two Americas is their goal. Not ours. Our major news networks are already pretty polarized in terms of ideology and quite frankly, on-screen representation. Think about that every time you see Donna on the Fox News Channel.

To be honest, it’s crazy to me that more coverage and scrutiny wasn’t given to this headline via Variety:

Earlier this month, the Democratic National Committee announced that it decided not to let the Fox News network host one of the twelve 2020 presidential primary debates. This type of scenario is pretty problematic as far as I’m concerned, essentially curtailing a key demographic of Americans away from the opportunity to hear a debate between an entire political party’s candidates. Bill Sammon, senior VP and managing editor of Fox News, said, “We hope the DNC will reconsider its decision […] and [..] offer candidates an important opportunity to make their case to the largest TV news audience in America, which includes many persuadable voters.” (Note: It’s the “largest TV news audience” only because the liberal-leaning audience is broken up among other major networks such as MSNBC and CNN, which collectively have a larger audience, but I digress). Former Republican Sen. Rick Santorum added, “This is part of the whole idea that we only want to play with people who agree with us. That’s a very bad sign for democracy.”

Like, not for nothing, but Fox News did not host a Democratic debate in the 2016 election cycle, and we see how that ended up. Which brings me back to Donna. This is why her announcement and appearance on Fox News is so important. The fact that she, a black woman, has an official seat at the table on a politically right-skewing network is a big damn deal. Perhaps we should check our knee-jerk reaction of rejecting something at face value at the door and embrace the possibility of what her presence means for all of us (as women of color, the heartland and middle America, etc). This is not the time to keep playing these “you can’t sit with us games” (within reason of course because I’m still on the fence about Kanye and his logic behind the red hat……). And let’s be clear, Donna is quite the intellectual upgrade from the previously clueless Fox News cultural analyst. I could think of no one better to enter the Fox News world and bring in perspective.  I don’t think they are ready for her, but she of course happily welcomes the challenge, saying, “I am excited by the opportunity to share my perspective and views with the Fox News audience and to help shape the dialogue at this important juncture in our history … To bridge this great divide, we need to bust out of our comfort zone. In coming to work as a commentator at Fox News, trust me, I’m stepping out of my comfort zone. My beliefs will be challenged, and I welcome it.”

So even if the Fox News Channel does not host a 2020 Democratic Party debate, they gonna get the left leaning, black girl magic anyway. You gotta see the genius in this…..Talk about securing the bag, sis. Donna is about to run intellectual circles around these folks, read them, and educate them at the same damn time. In heels.

Black women for the win, y’all.

Thank you for listening to my TedTalk.
