The moment I have been waiting for (besides the anticipated birth of my daughter) has come and gone. I will say that although the moment went by so fast, I came away with some of the fondest memories that I will cherish forever.
I almost couldn’t sleep the night before. I felt like a kid on Christmas. I didn’t know what to expect or who I would see…nothing! My A-Team (sisters and friends) who planned the shower kept damn near all the shower details amongst themselves. Talk about torture! But I knew just like most things that it would be worth the wait.
At about 8:30 a.m., I was tapped out of my sleep by my surprisingly cheerful boyfriend. “It’s time to get up,” he said. We made plans to do a last minute mall run to find the finishing touches for our matching pink outfits since the hectic week chewed up most of our free time.
We were in an out of the mall like never before. On the way to grandma’s house, I stopped to pick up my college-girl niece who promised to do my makeup. She is self-taught and can beat the heck out of a face, so I knew I was in good hands.
We ran a few additional errands because no event is without its last minute hiccups. Finally, we were dressed and ready to go. Mommy and Daddy-to-be were headed to the venue. We were greeted at the door by my sister/host, then we were immediately turned around for an impromptu photo shoot with our photographer for the night. That helped both calm and build anxiety about what awaited us on the other side of the venue’s doors.
Finally given the green light to go in, my heart was beating so hard I could hear it. I gripped my boyfriend’s hand so tightly I could have broken it. We strolled in to see a bunch of smiling faces and hear the sweet sound of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.”
Before I could check out the entire room, tears filled my eyes. I couldn’t believe I was finally there. Eight months pregnant and at my own baby shower…Is this real?
We were overjoyed to say the very least. Wasting no time, we jumped right in. Greetings, games, pictures, and food. The A-team did an amazing job. I had a blast and the food was A-MAZ-ING! It certainly went too fast. It wasn’t your traditional shower but nothing my family does seems to be. The prayers and well wishes for our growing family really helped remind me how loved we are and how many people are truly looking forward to this “Little Starr.”
Days later I still play that day back in my mind, this moment was long awaited. I’m grateful for our village. We couldn’t have come this far without each and every person who has supported us on this journey. One step closer to Mommy-hood. YAY!
